"Education means opportunity: the opportunity to improve yourself, to achieve your potential, and to build your self-respect through knowledge. Building this self-respect means learning to appreciate a diversity of viewpoints. This can come through classroom situations, through participation in extracurricular activities, and through involvement with the fine arts.

"Music, theatre, and the visual arts are important parts of an education. Hearing speakers offer different opinions or bring viewpoints from different cultures can help a student appreciate the wide diversity encompassed by our society.

"All of this is important whether you are studying biological sciences, marketing, or (as I did) geophysics. It is a university's responsibility to provide the opportunity for all students to gain an appreciation for the arts and diverse points of view."

Michigan Tech now offers the largest and most comprehensive cultural programming in the Upper Peninsula. The Performing Arts Center establishes the University as the region's cultural cornerstone. The Center provides rehearsal and performance facilities for the hundreds of Michigan Tech students who participate in the University's fine arts programs. It also provides a first-class facility for a diverse array of world class performances: theatre and dance companies, musical events, and lectures. And, finally, the Center provides Michigan Tech students with a rich, comprehensive education; one that includes a well-rounded program of personal development and that contributes to their intellectual development.
